From the Head of School

"The school should become the place where the child can live in freedom" ~ Maria Montessori

"Raising healthy children is a labor intensive operation. Contrary to the news from the broader culture, most of what children need, money cannot buy. Children need time and space, attention, affection, guidance and conversation. They need sheltered places where they can be safe as they learn what they need to know to survive." ~ Mary Pipher

These are two of my favorite quotes because they act as reminders of what Dr. Montessori taught us about how important environment is to children. All of us at HCMS are committed to providing our children an environment that nurtures the whole child.

This environment is comprised of so much more than just the didactic materials the children use to explore their world. It just as importantly includes how we, as adults, model a love of learning to the children. We do this by making staff professional development a priority, by always coming to the classroom with joy and enthusiasm, and most of all, by not being afraid to make a mistake.

By providing this environment, we achieve both our mission, "to foster a natural love of learning...," and by extension, our vision of contributing to our community by nurturing sensitivity, respect, intelligence, and creativity in our children.

As Montessori educators, we protect this community for the children so theirs is truly a place in which they can "live in freedom." We invite you to come and visit our school community where "Together We Make the Difference."
